Pertains to Coward's years as Superintendent of The Citadel. Letterpress copybooks vols. 3 & 4, 1890-1903 of outgoing correspondence with an index in each volume. Incoming letters 1890-1908 (twelve boxes) are from parents, cadets, alumni, Board of Visitors, faculty, state and federal officials. Topics include electrical wiring, rifles, ordnance, books, salaries, scholarships and college business.

Correspondence throughout the collections from Alumni concerning Citadel matters both past, present and future. The Association of Graduates wrote about business of the association. Alumni requested recommendations, assistance and often suggested improvements.

Correspondence 1900 re financial support of baseball team. Later correspondence concerning baseball and request for football games.

In April 1898 more than 40 cadets protested actions of a cadet officer and left The Citadel. Parents, friends, alumni wrote numerous letters. One letter written by the father lf J.S. Cantey. Board of Visitors' actions on dismissal and reentering of cadets are located in correspondence of 1898 and spring of 1899.
