Vincent Adams enlisted in the Navy at age seventeen. He served aboard the USS Duchess, a troop transport ship assigned to the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. He experienced combat in the battle of Okinawa. After the war, Adams enrolled in The Citadel and graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering.
