Confederate Army officer. Johnson was a 2nd lieutenant, Company D, 2nd Regiment S.C. Volunteers (Old Secession Guards). He served in Kershaw's Brigade, Connor's Brigade and Kennedy's Brigade.
Camped on The Citadel Green, Johnson described shelling of Charleston Feb. 14-18, panic and riots due to rations and evacuation. He was the last of troops to leave Charleston. His wife and relatives in Columbia, S.C. were worried about Sherman's approach. Mentioned seeing Gen. Joseph Eggleston Johnston in March 20th entry. April 18-30 entries pertain to the surrender.
