Robert Kirksey recalls his decision to attend The Citadel entering in the fall of 1940. During World War II he served in combat as an infantry lieutenant in Europe during World War II. He was wounded in action during an attack of the Siegfried Line in the fall of 1944 and received the Purple Heart and Silver Star for his contributions. After the war, he returned to The Citadel and graduated with a degree in political science. He returned to Alabama where he practiced law and also served as a probate judge.
