"Genealogical Record of Benjamin Martin, Sr. and Memoirs of his son Samuel Maner Martin." Martin describes taking the competitive examination [1892] for a scholarship at The Citadel and winning over eight competitors. He received $300 per year which covered tuition, board and uniform. Martin and his father drove to Barnwell Court House in order to take the exam and stayed at Johnson Hagood's house.
