Educator, pastor of St. Andrews Lutheran Church in Charleston, S.C. 1897-1904, president of Newberry College in Newberry, S.C. 1904-1908, president of Throop Polytechnic Institute (known today as Califorina Institute of Tecnology) 1908-1920.
James Scherer's address, The Voice of Charleston, was delivered at the commencement excercises of The Citadel. Scherer provided a beautiful description of Charleston and concluded with a message for the cadets to be conservative, courageous and independent men.
