The Site Window

The Site Window is a tool that has two main functions: organization and file transfer.

As an organizational tool, the Site Window will help you keep all of the files in your site organized.  You can create new Web pages, delete old Web pages, and move Web pages to different folders, all from within the Site Window.

As a file transfer tool, the Site Window allows you to copy the Web pages from your computer to the appropriate folder on the Web server.

Before the Site Window can do either of these functions, it needs to know the location of the files you are working on.  It also needs to know the location of the Web server.  Setting up this information is called "Defining the Site," and it only has to be set up once.  Dreamweaver will remember the information, each time it opens.

Defining a Site

  1. Go under the Site menu and choose New Site.
  2. The Site Definition Window will open.
  3. Set up the Local Info.
    • Give the Site a name; something relevant to the Web pages you are working with.
    • Locate the Local Root folder, which is the main folder where your Web pages are kept.
  4. Set up the Web Server Info.
    • Change the Server Access to FTP.
    • For the FTP Host, type in the name of the Web server.
    • The Host Directory is the folder where your pages are kept on the Web server.  Normally, you don't have to fill in this information.
    • Type in your login.
    • Type in your password, or leave the field blank.  (If you leave the password field blank, then when you connect to the Web server you will be prompted for a password.)
    • Click OK.
  5. The Create Cache dialog box will open.
  6. Click Create.
  7. The Site Window will open.
