Line Spacing

Line spacing on a Web page is a lot different than line spacing in a word processor.  There are two ways to achieve line spacing a Web page: the line break and the paragraph break.

Paragraph Break

When you start typing in Dreamweaver, you are creating a paragraph of text.  The text will continue to the right edge of Web page and then wrap to the next line.  When you press the Enter key on the keyboard, you are ending the that paragraph and beginning another.   In other words, you are creating a paragraph break every time you press the Enter key, and there is white space between the two paragraphs of text, which looks like double spacing.

Example:

Paragraph One

Paragraph Two

Things to Remember:
 - Press the Enter key to create a paragraph break.
 - Paragraph breaks add space around the paragraph.
 - The effect is similar to double-spacing.

Line Break

You can have a line break within a paragraph of text.  A line break will cause a line of text to start on the very next line, similar to single spacing.  Usually line breaks are used in short lines of text, NOT long paragraphs.  Some examples where you might want to use a line break are poems, mailing addresses, and items in a list.  To create a line break in Dreamweaver, hold down the Shift key on the keyboard, and then press Enter.

Example:

Paragraph One
This is the first line break.
This is the second line break.

Paragraph Two
The Citadel
171 Moultrie Street
Charleston, SC  29409

Things to Remember:
 - Press Shift and Enter to start a new line of text within a paragraph.
 - Line breaks put the text on the next line, but they don't add any white space after the text.
 - The effect is similar to single spacing.

Lists

There are two different types of lists: ordered lists and unordered lists.  The key to creating lists is to type the list using paragraph breaks to separate each item. Next, highlight the list, and click on the appropriate list button on the Property Inspector Palette. Then to achieve different outline levels, use the Text Indent button on the Property Inspector Palette.  (Please Note: Only the ordered list bullets change when the text is indented.  The ordered list numbers do not change when indented.  They will need to be changed manually. )

Spaces

Using the Tab key and pressing the Space Bar don't work the same way in Dreamweaver as in a word processor.  In fact, they don't work at all, and this is not a Dreamweaver fluke.  HTML only allows for one space between characters, and since Dreamweaver is an HTML editor, it only allows for the one space.  There is a way around this limitation, and that is to use a non-breaking space.  Any time you insert a non-breaking space, you are writing a code that says, "Put another space here."

To Insert a Non-Breaking Space:

  1. Hold down the Shift and Ctrl keys on the keyboard.
  2. Tap the Space Bar.
