Microsoft Word

Copy & Paste As Text

There is a difference between Paste and Paste as Text .  The regular pasting method is really only useful for a small amount of text, because the text loses its paragraph formatting.  Everything is combined into one paragraph.  The Paste as Text method keeps the paragraphs separate, so it is extremely useful for copying large amounts of text.  Please note: In both pasting methods, all of the character formatting, such as font face, font size, etc., is lost, and the information will need to be formatted once it is pasted onto the Web page.

In Word:

  1. Open the document.
  2. Select the text to be copied.
  3. Go under the Edit menu, and choose Copy.

In Dreamweaver:

  1. Open the Web page.
  2. Place the cursor where the text will be inserted.
  3. Go under the Edit menu, and choose Paste as Text.

Linking to a Word Document

You can create a link directly to a Microsoft Word document, however the people viewing your page have to have Word installed on their computer in order to view it.  This procedure is really only useful for a target audience that you know has access to Word, i.e. students at The Citadel.  This would not work well if the file was to be viewed by the general public, because they may not have Word installed on their computers.

Assuming they do have Microsoft Word on their computer, this process will work differently in Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator.  In Internet Explorer, when you click on the link to the Word document, Microsoft Word opens the document within the browser window.  In Netscape Navigator, when you click on the link to the Word document, you will see a dialog box asking if you would like to open the file or if you would like to save the file to the computer before opening it.  Example

  1. Place a copy of the Word document in one of the folders where you keep your Web pages.
  2. In Dreamweaver, open the Web page that is going to link to the Word document.
  3. Type in the text for the link.
  4. Highlight the text.
  5. Click on the yellow folder icon on the Property Inspector Palette.
  6. A dialog box will open.
  7. Browse to the Word file, and click Select.
  8. The highlighted text will now be underlined.
  9. To test the link, preview the page.
