The Citadel Faculty Council – Meeting Minutes of October 27, 2005

Prof. Harry Davakos, Chair of Faculty Council, called meeting to order at 11:00AM in Bond Hall, Room 295.

Members Attending: Professors Trautman, Comer, Woolsey, Thompson, Calloway, Brown, Sinisi, McNamara, Politano, McKinney, Zuraw, Davakos, Heisser, Richardson, Andrade, Davis, and Hurren.

Approval of Agenda: approved by those present.

Approval of Minutes: minutes from September 22, 2005 Faculty Council meeting were approved, motion by Prof. Politano, second by Prof. Comer

New Business

  1. Principled Leader Development Concept: LTC Jeff Weart provided a briefing on an institutional level draft document addressing leadership development in the Corps of Cadets. He provided an update of the process and status of the draft document development. Will be seeking faculty endorsement in the future.

  2. Campus Facilities: Col. Don Tomasik provided a briefing on campus facilities and Physical Plant activities. He was accompanied by members of his staff including Bob Williamson, Jim Fitzgerald and John Gardner.

  3. Faculty House Board of Trustees: Three faculty members were appointed including; Professors John Moore, Elizabeth Connor and Richard Porcher. These individuals will serve on the Board of Trustees for the Faculty House as appointees; with all following members to be elected as per the charter.

  4. Distinguished Professor Designation: A proposal for standardizing faculty designations beyond the level of professor and for appointed scholarly positions was discussed. Concerns related to the following 1.) level of funding required and if these funds would be a good allocation of resources, 2.) use of additional position designations such as Artist in Residence, Scientist in Residence, etc. to appropriately and equitably meet the needs of all academic departments, 3.) designations should not carry over to Emeritus Professor status and should only valid during time of appointment, 4.) similarities to former faculty fellows program, which was discontinued after a period of time. Prof. Davakos will solicit additional comments from Faculty Council via e-mail and pass concerns/input along to the Provost.

  5. Greater Issues Speakers – Prof. Davakos stated the Provost is seeking assistance from faculty to identify a list of possible speakers for the Greater Issues Speaker series.

  6. Uniform Survey Update: Prof. Politano presented a draft version of a survey that will be used to collect data on faculty uniforms. After considerable discussion concerning specific questions included on the survey, Faculty Council approved the survey by majority vote, for distribution to faculty via department representatives, contingent on incorporating some editorial changes in the survey document.

  7. Constitution of the Citadel Faculty Council: Proposed changes to the Faculty Council Constitution, specifically regarding Article III, part A and Part B, were discussed and approved by majority vote, motion by Prof. Woolsey, second by Prof. McKinney.

  8. Next Meeting: Next meeting is scheduled for November 17.
