GRADUATE COUNCIL
Minutes
3 May 2001
The Graduate Council met on this date in the Achurch Room of Capers Hall. Members in attendance were Dr. David Allen, Dr. Michael Barrett, Dr. Mark Bebensee, Dr. Harry Carter, LTC Carla deMille, LTC Pat Ezell, Dr. Al Finch, Dr. Jeff Goodwin for Dr. John Carter, Dr. John Kuzenski for Dr. Robert Steed, Dr. Angela LeClercq, Dr. Tom Thompson.
Dr. Harry Carter called the meeting to order. The minutes of the 5 April meeting were approved as distributed.
Dr. Al Finch asked about the status of graduate assistants for the academic year 2001-2002. With the anticipated budget reductions, eliminating graduate assistants had been suggested as a means of cutting costs. Dr. Carter stated that he was waiting to hear exactly what the percentage budget cut would be. He indicated he did not anticipate any significant cuts. He hopes to know by June 15 and for planning purposes will get the graduate assistant assignments out by June 15. If a department needs to make a decision on an assistant before June 15, Dr. Carter asked the department chair to contact him.
Dr. Bebensee presented a motion to make three courses that have been offered in the MBA program as electives under the special topics course, BADM 650, individual courses with individual numbers. A syllabus for each course was presented. The courses are BADM 6XX, Internet Resources for Managers, BADM 6XX, International Management, and BADM 6XX, Business Forecasting. The motion was seconded and passed with no dissenting vote. These courses will appear in the 2001-2002 catalog as electives in the MBA program.
Dr. Charles Cleaver, in absentia, asked the Council if each course in the approved Master of Computer and Information Science must come before Council to be approved. The courses had been previously approved when the program was approved. It was the concensus of the Council that each course did not need to be presented to Council since the program had been approved.
Dr. Dan Ouzts, in absentia, asked the Council's approval to delete EDUC 633, Chemical Dependency and Families, from the catalog. The course has never been offered, does not appear in the graduate catalog, but does appear in the computer course inventory. Council approved the deletion of this course from the catalog.
Dr. Carter announced the new Dean of Business, Dr. Earl Walker. Dr. Walker comes from Rockhurst University and taught at West Point for twenty years. He will arrive on 1 August.
Dr. Carter also announced the new Dean of Education, Dr. Ken Henson. Dr. Henson comes from Eastern Kentucky University. He will arrive on campus in mid August.
Dr. Carter announced the new department head for biology, Dr. Paul Rosenblum. Dr. Rosenblum comes from Lyon College in Batesville, Arkansas.
Dr. Carter reported that upon completion of Thompson Hall, the Office of Special Services, the Writing Center, the Office of International Student Services, and the Office of Multicultural Student Services will move into that building to form an Academic Student Support Center.
There being no further business the meeting was adjourned.
