Library Services Committee Meeting
April 13, 1995

Present: Bowman, Cleaver, Cohn, Del Mastro, Nath, Reilly
Absent: Benson, Lally, Lipovsky, Maybrouck

Professor Cleaver of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science,
Chairman of the Library Services Committee, called the second meeting of the
Committee of the Spring, 1995 semester to order at 11:04 A.M. Professor Cleaver
reported on the status of the Library Head search: two of the candidates turned
us down, the third was deemed unacceptable.

Col. Reilly reported that he and General Poole want the College to reopen the
search. He indicated that he felt that it would be unrealistic to expect to get
someone by the fall of 1995 and therefore that we should aim for a January 1996
or perhaps even a July 1996 starting date. He questioned whether we should have
a new search committee. After some discussion the Library Services Committee
came to a consensus that we should continue with the same search committee.

The next item of business was a discussion of the budget. Professor Nath
reported that he had made a budget request for next year which would include a
$6,000 allotment for graduate books and a $29,000 allotment for undergraduate
books. He remarked that of the $25,000 that Col. Lyons had obtained this year
for the Library, $23,000 had gone for items other than books. Professor Bowman
suggested that the Committee write a letter to General Poole supporting
Professor Nath's budget request.

Professor Cleaver adjourned the meeting at 12:20 P.M.

Library Services Committee Meeting
January 26, 1995

Present: Bowman, Cleaver, Cohn, Del Mastro, Hewitt, Lipovsky, Nath
Absent: Benson, Lally, Maybrouck

Professor Cleaver of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science,
Chairman of the Library Services Committee, called the first meeting of the
Committee of the spring, 1995 semester to order at 11:10 A.M. The first item of
business was a report by Professor Bowman on the progress of the search for a
new Library Director. Professor Bowman indicated that the search committee has
narrowed the search to four candidates, that one of them, however, has accepted
a position elsewhere and is no longer available, that Dean Reilly has suggested
an additional candidate, and that the search committee was scheduled to meet
later that day to consider the matter further. Professor Cleaver indicated that
the Library Services Committee would need to meet in February to interview the
top candidates, once they have been determined.

Professor Cleaver then informed the Library Services Committee that Professor
Pyatt, acting Library Director, has resigned his position at the Citadel and
that Professor Nath has been appointed to be the new acting Library Director.
Professor Nath in turn informed the Committee that the Library at present has
two full time positions open in addition to the position of Library Director.

The final item of business was a discussion of the status of the search for an
outside consultant to evaluate the needs of the Library. Professor Cleaver
reminded the Committee that Professor Pyatt has provided the Committee with the
names of three possible consultants and indicated that a fourth had been
suggested to him, but the matter remains very much open. Professor Cleaver
reported to the Committee that Dean Reilly thinks that the College should
postpone the choice of outside consultant until the new Library Director has
been hired.

Professor Cleaver adjourned the meeting at 11:45 P.M.

Library Services Committee Meeting
October 20, 1994

Present: Benson, Cleaver, Cohn, Del Mastro, Lally, Lipovsky, Maybrouck, Pyatt
Absent: Bowman, Hewitt,

Professor Cleaver of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science,
Chairman of the Library Services Committee, called the second meeting of the
Committee of the fall, 1994 semester to order at 11:03 A.M. The first item of
business was the consideration of the minutes of the meetings of May 3, May 12,
and August 22, 1994, which were approved as presented..

The next item of business was a presentation by Professor Pyatt, acting head of
the Daniel Library, on the current status of the Library. Professor Pyatt
informed the Committee that as of the time of the meeting, the budget for the
Library is the same as last year. He pointed out, however, that in the academic
year 1991-92, the Library book budget had been $60,000, that this figure had
been cut to $30,000 for the years 1992-93 and 1993-94, and that although CDF
had partially made up for the cut by allocating $25,000 to the Library for
books in each of those years, it would not be doing so for the 1994-95 academic
year. He said, however, that Col. Lyons would give the library $30,000 in State
funds to bring the book budget up to the $60,000 level, but that there was no
guarantee that this level of funding could be maintained in the future.
Professor Pyatt also discussed a proposal to soundproof a room on the second
floor of the library to use as a meeting and study room, to place partitions
on the second floor, and also to purchase new furniture. His projected cost for
renovations to the Library was $65,500, not counting repairs to the roof.

The final item of business was a brief discussion of the status of the search
for an outside consultant to evaluate the needs of the Library.

Professor Cleaver adjourned the meeting at 12:15 P.M.

the first meeting of the Library Services Committee of the fall, 1994 semester
to order at 1:50 P.M. The first item of business was the election of new
officers. The Committee elected Professor Cleaver of the Mathematics Department
to be the new Chairman, and re-elected Professor Cohn, also of the Mathematics

issues that the Committee considered last year.
