Prof. Barrett graduated from The Citadel in 1968 with honors and a degree in Modern Languages (German). He was also a Distinguished Military Graduate. He is a retired Brigadier General in the Army Reserve.
He earned his M.A. and Ph.D. at the University of Massachusetts and had a Fulbright Scholarship to Germany for dissertation research.
Barrett is the author of Operation Albion: The German Conquest of the Baltic Islands (Indiana U., 2008), which was a monthly selection of both the History and Military Book Clubs. He is co-author with H.P. Willmott of Clausewitz Reconsidered (Praeger, 2009). He is currently writing a book for Indiana on the Austro-German Campaign in Romania in 1916.
