Frank Carlson is a medievalist with a specialization in the high medieval Church, especially the twelfth-century papacy. He completed his B.A. at the University of Washington, his M.A. at Western Washington University, and his Ph.D. at Trinity College Dublin. His current research focuses on the interrelationship between the papacy and the Western Church in the mid-twelfth century, as well as the papacy’s temporal and diplomatic policy as it concerned the nascent ‘Papal States’ and the secular powers of Central Europe in the decades before and after 1150.
