The Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina

Type of Institution

The Citadel is a state-supported comprehensive military college. Males and females are admitted to the undergraduate residential Corps of Cadets. In addition to the day program, undergraduate and graduate programs are offered through the College of Graduate and Professional Studies (CGPS) in the evening. The Citadel is recognized by the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education as the only specialized four-year college in the state.

Enrollment

Enrollment in the fall of the 2003-2004 academic year is 1,942 cadets. The Corps of Cadets is comprised of students from forty-seven states and twenty-sevent foreign countries. The combined average SAT score for first-time, full-time freshmen is 1107. The Citadel’s student body consists of 1,942 cadets, 32 fifth-year day students, 60 active duty, and 116 undergraduate and 938 graduate students in the College of Graduate and Professional Studies for a total of 3,088 students. In addition, The Citadel provides professional development opportunities for 607 teaching professionals in the Charleston area.

Faculty

Of the 154 full-time, tenured/tenure-track faculty (including librarians and faculty on sabbatical/leave) in Fall 2003, 110 (71%) are tenured, and 142 (92%) hold terminal degrees. 

Library

Daniel Library has an inventory of 236,418 books, serials, and government documents, 504 serial subscriptions, 1,193,192 microforms, 2,656 audiovisual, 1,480 cartographic, 786 compact discs, 1,329 music compact discs, and 162 materials (educational kits, games, etc.).  Also available are 83 online abstract and full-text journal databases providing access to over 11,000 electronic full text journal titles.

Finances

The Citadel's 2002-2003 budget was $61,970,809 of which $15,754,606 was appropriated by the state.

Campus

The Citadel sits on a 300-acre tract of land on the Ashley River. There are 27 buildings grouped around a large (10 acre) grass parade ground. The buildings around the parade ground include 10 classroom buildings, an administrative building, four barracks, a student activities building, infirmary, chapel, stadium, a field house, and library.  Just off the main campus are the football stadium, baseball stadium, and alumni center.

Academic Departments

The Citadel's fourteen academic departments offer five bachelor's degrees in 17 areas, six master's degrees in 17 areas, and specialist degrees in 2 areas.

ROTC Programs

The Citadel has been designated as an essential Military College, and its ROTC detachments are authorized to offer commissions in the Army, Air Force, Marine Corps, or Navy.
