A message from the Commanding Officer

Thank you for your interest in The Citadel’s NROTC Unit. If you are serious about a future as a commissioned officer in the United States Navy or Marine Corps, this is the program for you.  The Citadel has a very long and proud tradition of producing highly successful officers for the Navy and the Marine Corps.  Since its establishment in 1842, Citadel graduates have made a profound impact in the senior officer ranks of all the services – currently there are 2 Navy Admirals and 5 Marine Corps Generals in the active duty ranks who wear The Citadel ring.

It is also becoming increasingly renowned for its academic excellence.  In the US News and World Report 2008 Edition of America’s Best Colleges guidebook, The Citadel is ranked the No. 1 best value among southern colleges and is the No. 2 best public institution in the south among those offering up to a master’s degree.  For the eighth straight year, The Citadel School of Engineering was ranked among the top 50 undergraduate engineering programs in the nation (No.38).

The Citadel's rating as the best value in the South is due to several factors.  First of all, it is reasonably priced.  If you conduct a cost analysis of all the colleges you are considering, you will find that The Citadel is extremely affordable.  Also, with just over 2,000 students on campus, there is a very low student to instructor ratio (18:1).  Most classes have 30 students or less and, unlike most major universities, a full professor – not teaching or graduate assistants, teaches almost every class.  You will not be a faceless number on The Citadel campus, but a student well known by the faculty and your fellow students.

Professionally, you will join one of the best NROTC Units in the nation.  You will receive all the support and assistance you will need to get your degree, as well as a very demanding program to prepare you for the Fleet as an Officer in the Navy or Marine Corps.  You will be part of a big family here, together with many other similarly motivated students.  As I write this, there are well over two hundred aspiring Navy and Marine Corps officers in our unit.  They will provide you with the academic, professional, and moral support you need in order to earn your degree and commission.

Finally, Charleston is one of the most exciting cities in North America.  This year Travel and Leisure Magazine ranked Charleston as the fifth best city in the US – behind only New York, San Francisco, Chicago, and Santa Fe.

If you are interested in the NROTC program, you must at least consider The Citadel.  It is a conservative, disciplined, military college and truly one of the best-kept secrets in the NROTC program.  Call and talk with a current member of our unit or better yet, come by and visit.  We will be happy to give you a tour of the campus and answer your questions.  Don't pass up The Citadel without checking us out - it will be well worth the effort!  If I can be of any assistance, please don't hesitate to call me at (843) 953-5171.  Best of luck to you in your college search!

Semper Fidelis,
Col K. F. Frederick, USMC
Commanding Officer
NROTC, The Citadel
