Family gift of land will support
T. Walter Brashier, a past parent and long time friend of The Citadel, has donated a parcel of land in Columbia, South Carolina to The Citadel Foundation to establish the T. Walter Brashier Family Scholarships Fund. The land, valued at nearly $2.5 million, will be used by The Citadel to attract students who exemplify the qualities of leadership and achievement that best characterize The South Carolina Corps of Cadets.
A resident of Traveler's Rest, South Carolina, Brashier has been prominent in real estate development across the U.S. and in the Greenville region for more than 30 years. As one of South Carolina's largest private developers, he is the founder and CEO of the Brashier family of companies which includes T. Walter Brashier & Associates and Brashier Real Estate Investments.
In addition to the Walter Brashier Family Scholarships Fund at The Citadel, Mr. Brashier has generously endowed scholarships at Charleston Southern University and North Greenville College, and supported Greenville Technical College and other charitable endeavors throughout the Greenville area.
When asked about his interest in aspiring students, Brashier said, "I am just sold on school."
"I am very much impressed," he continues, "with the level of discipline instilled in students at The Citadel, and with the quality of the education that the cadets receive."
Mr. Brashier began a lasting relationship with The Citadel through his son, Ted Brashier, who graduated in 1987. In the days since his son's enrollment, Mr. Brashier has not only maintained close ties to the school, but has also witnessed the beginnings of what is quickly becoming a Brashier family tradition. His grandson Samuel W. Brashier graduated in 2002, and another grandson, Thomas W. Brashier III, graduated in 2003.
The T. Walter Brashier Family Scholarships Fund will provide Citadel Leadership Scholarship awards to prospective students who have demonstrated the qualities of leadership, academic achievement, self-discipline, and service-qualities that will enable them to excel in The Citadel's unique military environment. Currently, each Citadel Leadership Scholarship requires an endowment in the amount of $100,000. Endowed scholarships will be awarded on a year-to-year basis and administered by the College Scholarship Committee. Recipients will be eligible for renewed consideration in subsequent years during the course of study, as long as they continue to comply with the selection criteria.
When making awards from the T. Walter Brashier Family Scholarships Fund, first preference will be given to qualified applicants from the Greenville, South Carolina region. Mr. Brashier's gift and commitment will ensure that qualified students from Greenville and beyond will have the advantages of a Citadel education. The gift will enable The Citadel to attract and admit those students who, regardless of financial capacity, best demonstrate the qualities of leadership, service, and achievement which define the Corps of Cadets.
