Cadets explore academic challenges around the world
Five cadets, all members of the Honors Program, participated in The Citadel Summer Scholars Study Abroad Program as Star of the West Fellows last summer. The program was created to support academic enrichment of undergraduate students pursuing special postgraduate scholarship opportunities. The cadets were able to experience the academic atmospheres of other universities as an enhancement to their Citadel studies.

  • Cadet Andrew Brooks, a resident of Springfield, Va., studied German for eight weeks at Goethe Institute's Intensive Language Course at Schwäbisch Hall and Berlin. He also took side trips to Cologne and Frankfurt where he studied Roman colonization. The senior German major is preparing to compete for a Fulbright Scholarship in 2005.

  • Cadet John Dennis is a physics major interested in spaced-based research on an international level. A native of Conway, S.C., Dennis is a senior. He attended classes at the University of Sussex this summer.

  • Cadet Michael Kelly studied the developing connection of Christianity and the West at the Oxford Summer Program in England. Kelly is an English major and a junior from Waxahachie, Texas.

  • Cadet Deon Nelson is also an English major. He studied English literature at New York University. A resident of Nederland, Texas, Nelson is a senior preparing to compete for a Rhodes Scholarship.

  • Like Nelson, Olivia Perry-Smith is preparing to compete for a Rhodes Scholarship. The senior is

"The Star of the West Fellows program provides an excellent opportunity for these cadets to pursue their scholarly ambitions," said Citadel President Maj. Gen. John S. Grinalds. "With their exceptional academic records and their quest for learning, they represent the college well."

Funding for Star of the West Fellows is supported by a generous grant from the Star of the West Foundation. The Star of the West Foundation, established by the late William J. Wannamaker Jr., has been awarding scholarship funds to The Citadel since 1952.
