MSNBC's "Hardball with Chris Matthews" CollegeTour
to be telecast live from The Citadel

“Hardball with Chris Matthews,” MSNBC’s Washington, D.C.-based series, will telecast live from The Citadel on Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002 (9-10 p.m. ET) as part of its year-long “Hardball College Tour 2002,” featuring top political leaders and culture figures at college campuses nationwide. Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) will be the guest for the live telecast in Mark Clark Hall Auditorium.

The telecast is not open to the public.

More than 500 Citadel cadets will have the opportunity to “play hardball” by asking questions and participating in a lively discussion with Matthews and Kerry.

Following the telecast, one cadet, selected by the college, will sit in the “Hardball Hot Seat” for a one-on-one rapid-fire question and answer session with “Hardball’s” Chris Matthews.  At the end of the school year, “Hardball” will telecast a final tournament with the top 10 students from the dozens who have competed on the tour, to determine a “Hardball Hot Seat” winner.  The final “Hardball Hot Seat” winner will receive a $10,000 scholarship award plus a $5,000 grant for their college.

“There’s an electricity in the air whenever you sit with college students and match wits with big name politicians,” said Matthews.  “We’ll find out what’s on the minds of the younger generation, how they hold their leaders accountable, the issues that matter to them – from the war to domestic policies to corporate responsibility.”

"We are happy to have this unique educational opportunity for our students," Citadel President Maj. Gen. John S. Grinalds said.

“Hardball” is telecast live from a different college campus every Wednesday during the school year.  Among the stops on The “Hardball College Tour 2002” are George Mason University, Arlington VA (Sept. 25) with House Majority Leader Dick Armey (R-Texas) and Fordham University, NYC (Oct. 16) with Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.).
