Honor society earns distinguished recognition

For the 10th consecutive year, The Citadel Tau Iota chapter of Sigma Delta Pi, the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society has earned honor chapter distinction by the National Executive Committee for outstanding activities performed in the 2001-2002 academic year.

Only 17 of the 507 chapters nationwide were chosen for this prestigious distinction, and this year The Citadel ranked third in the nation among the 17 awardees.

“It is especially befitting,” said faculty advisor Maj. Mark P. Del Mastro, “since the current academic year marks both the 10th anniversary of our chapter, which was founded January 26, 1993, and the 10th anniversary of the publication of our national, refereed journal, El Cid.

Capt. Maria Rippon co-advises the chapter with Del Mastro.  Cadets currently serving as officers of the college’s chapter are President George Alvites, Vice President Paul Swaim, and Secretary-Treasurer David Ponce.
