MEMORANDUM

DATE:             7 January 2009

TO:                  ALL PHYSICAL PLANT PERSONNEL

FROM:            Jim FitzGerald, Director Physical Plant

SUBJECT:      Dress Code/Appearance Standards

As a representative of The Citadel and as a member of the Physical Plant it is important that you maintain a neat professional appearance and ALWAYS represent the college in good taste. Our campus is open to the public and regularly hosts events bringing visitors to the campus.  Visitors will immediately judge our college and our organization by the impression they form based on your appearance.  Sloppily dressed employees give the impression of uncaring employees who have little regard for their appearance and likely do not care about their work.  Each of us is constantly in the public eye and must represent the college in a professional manner whether performing routine duties or in support of the numerous college sponsored activities. As a representative of The Citadel and of this organization, and in order for Physical Plant employees to present a professional image to the public,  personnel will conform to the following dress code.

  1. Effective January 7, 2009, the following standards are to be observed:

·         Uniforms  - Uniforms obtained through the college contractor, consisting of the  collared white pin strip shirt for supervisors and collared solid blue shirt for all other workers with dark blue trousers are mandatory. Each shirt should have the contractor produced identification tags with the employee’s last name and shop.

·         Shoes – Shoes will be appropriate for the type of work in the shops and in the Physical Plant offices. Leather safety shoes/boots are required for shop personnel. Fabric and sneaker shoes, flip flops, Crocs and similar shoes are prohibited.  See separate Shoe Policy Memorandum for details on Safety Shoes.

·         Hats – Hats, in good taste and without inappropriate graphics and writing, are optional. Citadel and Physical Plant hats are preferred. Hats will be worn properly with the bill facing forward.

·         Office Wear – For ladies dresses, skirts, culottes, blouses or pants outfits that present a professional image will be required. For men pleated or plain front dress pants with a collared shirt are required. Shorts will not be allowed as office wear for men or women.

·         General Appearances – Hair and facial hair will be well kept and neatly trimmed. An unshaven, unkempt appearance is not acceptable.  Hair length for men shall not be below the collar.

·         The last Friday of each month will be considered “dress down” day.  For Office Staff casual wear will include jeans free of rips, holes, stains, discoloration and frayed hems/cuffs and appropriate shirts/sweaters will be allowed. For all other staff - jeans free of rips, holes, stains, discoloration and frayed hems/cuffs and a solid color collared shirt will be allowed.  (EXCEPTION: The Friday proceeding the four special weekends: Parents’ Day, Homecoming, Corps Day and Commencement.)  Full details concerning The Citadel’s casual dress policies may be found on the Human Resources web site under the  Policies & Procedures - Business Casual.

  1. Exceptions:

            shoes.

May wear solid dark blue shorts that conform to standards for serviceability.

May wear jeans and T-shirts that are free of holes, rips, stains and discoloration. (They will not have any suggestive or inappropriate type of graphics or writing)

  1. This policy is in effect during all work hours, in support of Citadel events and when recalled for emergency repairs and maintenance. At the shop supervisor’s discretion, if working under extreme climatic conditions, the uniform shirt may be removed and replaced with a solid colored T-shirt at the job site. The uniform shirt will be worn when not on the job site or when in public view. At NO time will an employee be barebacked. Employees failing to meet the dress code standards may be sent home and they will not be paid for that time.
