COMPREHENSIVE STANDARD M5:
           The governing board is free from undue influence from political, religious, or other external bodies, and protects the institution from such influence.

STATEMENT OF COMPLIANCE: The Citadel is in compliance with Comprehensive Standard M5.

RATIONALE FOR JUDGMENT OF COMPLIANCE:

The freedom of The Citadel Board of Visitors from undue influence is addressed in its "Commitment to Excellence and Ethics," adopted on June 14, 2003 [Reference 1]. This document, which is signed by every regular member of the Board, takes a strong stand on these matters, affirming that Board members . . .

•  will "maintain the highest ethical standards by . . . representing all of the people of South Carolina rather than favoring any particular interest, community or constituency";

•  and will "be enthusiastic advocates for the College by . . . defending its autonomy" and by "maintaining loyalty to the College as a whole."

It is the intent of the Board of Visitors to require all of its members to reaffirm their commitment to the principles in this document by signing it every year at the Board's fall meeting, and they emphasize their commitment to it in another way by publicly posting it on their web site.
