| CORE REQUIREMENT 4:
The institution has a clearly defined and published mission statement specific to the institution and appropriate to an institution of higher education, addressing teaching and learning and, where applicable, research and public service.
STATEMENT OF COMPLIANCE: The Citadel is in compliance with Core Requirement #4.
RATIONALE FOR JUDGMENT OF COMPLIANCE:
The Citadel's mission statement (Reference 1) is published in the college catalogs (References 2 and 3) and on The Citadel's web site. It was reviewed and updated in 2002 by the Faculty and Staff Strategic Planning Committee in accordance with the Board of Visitors' statement of vision and values, approved by the President in December of 2002, and approved by the Board of Visitors on February 1, 2003. Like the mission statements of all other colleges and universities in the state system, The Citadel's mission statement must be reviewed and approved every five years by the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education (CHE). The Commission's standards for institutional mission statements (Reference 4) require compliance with SACS Core Requirement #4: that is, they must (among other things) be "specific to the institution," "appropriate to an institution of higher education," and address "teaching and learning and, where applicable, research and public service." The South Carolina Commission on Higher Education (CHE) approved The Citadel's mission statement on June 5, 2003.
