The Citadel Foundation Celebrates
Leaders in Philanthropy
The Citadel Foundation, on Friday, Sept. 25, 2009, will recognize and celebrate for the first time the generosity of those whose lifelong support allows the college to pursue its vision of achieving excellence in the education of principled leaders.
Nearly 160 members of The Citadel’s four lifetime giving societies, which represent individual donations of $100,000 or more, will gather at 2 p.m. in Summerall Chapel to be honored. Taken together, the current living members of the giving societies have committed nearly $122 million to The Citadel.
"Private philanthropy makes the crucial difference in the lives of cadets and graduate students because it is flexible, targeted, and can offset some of the recent cutbacks," said Dennis Bergvall, executive director of The Citadel Foundation. "Gifts from alumni and friends, particularly in times of economic uncertainty and declining state funding, provide the vital support that gives us a margin of excellence. A Citadel degree has value in the working world, and donor support ensures that The Citadel experience will remain exceptional.”
Citadel President Lt. Gen. John W. Rosa, ’73, will preside over the induction ceremony. Joining will be retired BellSouth executive Charles B. Coe, '73, chairman of The Citadel Foundation's board of directors, and Anderson D. Warlick, '79, president and CEO of Parkdale Mills and a founding member of the Society of 1842, the college's most prestigious giving society honoring those whose lifetime contributions exceed $1 million.
The featured speaker will be Holly D. Maslowski, Class of 2009. At 22, Maslowski has already demonstrated her own philanthropic leadership by committing to fund an endowed scholarship honoring Nancy Mace Jackson, '00, and Petra Lovetinska Seipel, '00, the first two women to graduate from The Citadel. For information about this scholarship and a profile of Ms. Maslowki, please visit http://externalaffairs.citadel.edu/holly_maslowski
The inaugural members of The Citadel Foundation's Leaders in Philanthropy are listed below. The 2009 inductees have demonstrated their profound commitment to the college through their leadership contributions of $100,000 or higher at the close of the 2008 calendar year.
In future years, new members will be invited to campus to participate in a similar induction ceremony, establishing the Leaders in Philanthropy weekend event as a new annual tradition celebrating charity and service as virtues of the principled leader.

The Society of 1842
Since its founding in 1842, The Citadel has molded cadets into citizen-soldiers whose guiding principles learned in the barracks, in the classroom and on the parade field serve their families, their communities, their professions and their country with distinction. The Society of 1842 is The Citadel’s most prestigious giving society.

The Mark Clark Society
General Mark W. Clark became president of The Citadel after a brilliant career in the U.S. Army. During his tenure (1954-1965), The Citadel achieved international recognition, and the Corps of Cadets increased to the maximum capacity of the barracks. One of General Clark’s most enduring accomplishments was the founding of the Cadet Honor Code, whereby a cadet does not lie, cheat, or steal, nor tolerate those who do.
