During World War I, 316 Citadel graduates served in Europe. A contingent of Citadel Alumni that made up an artillery brigade was on the first American convoy to sail to the battlefield (June 13, 1917) eventually firing America's first shot into German lines.
The entire Citadel Class of 1917 eventually served in the armed forces. Ten Citadel graduates (listed below) made the ultimate sacrifice. The number of Alumni killed on the battlefield is unknown.
